Effect of Implementing Visual Learning Materials on Academic Engagement Among Grade 6 Students

Authors

Abstract

This research aims to determine the impact of visual learning materials in enhancing the academic engagement of Grade 6 students at Alapan 2A Elementary School. The 165 respondents for this study were selected through purposive sampling technique. This research uses a descriptive-correlational design utilizing survey questionnaire which determined the level of the utilization of visual learning strategies (VLS) (diagrams, educational videos, and highlighting) and its effects on academic performance based on the examination results, retention of information, and recitation participation. Results showed that students seemed to heavily practice visual learning strategies since the top three of the weighted mean were diagrams, educational videos, and highlighting that had the average weighted means of 4.68, 4.37, and 4.32, respectively. In addition, visual learning methods were discovered to be effective in improving academic performance, especially in raising test scores, increasing retention and fomenting active classroom engagement. There was a very strong correlation (r = 0.978 p <0.001), association between students’ performance and visual learners using Pearson correlation analysis and hence, null hypothesis is rejected. These results also indicate the importance of using visual-based learning tools in daily teaching and instruction to enhance student engagement and academic achievement. Recommendations are made for policymakers and practitioners to encourage teachers and school administrators to use visual aids in lesson preparation and give the necessary training, facilities and resources for the effective integration of the aids. This study presents significant findings for improving teaching by utilizing visual learning in elementary schools.
